3 Reasons You’re Not Infertile, Even If Your Doctor Thinks You Are

3 Reasons You’re Not Infertile, Even If Your Doctor Thinks You Are

A lot of women come to me discouraged by their experience with western medicine, particularly when it comes to getting pregnant. While western medicine offers many technologically advanced options these days (that can be even more effective when used in conjunction with Chinese medicine), many women feel they don’t want to go to extreme, unnatural or expensive measures to have a baby. If you’ve been trying and not succeeding to get pregnant and your doctor thinks it’s time for intervention, here are 3 reasons you’re not infertile through the eyes of Chinese medicine:   1) It takes time to create a new environment (or fertile ground) in your body and mind. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views the body as a microcosm of nature.Western medicine focuses on fixing one small part of the body, whereas TCM fixes the entire ecosystem. As it is possible to turn infertile land into fertile land, it is also true within the body. In addition to creating fertile ground in your body, in Chinese...

The One Craving That’s Good For You

The One Craving That’s Good For You

You guessed it… acupuncture! In fact, I’ve had patients tell me that they love acupuncture so much they become addicted to it. And unlike many forms of addiction, acupuncture is actually good for you! Inserting needles in the body releases endorphins and powerful pain-relieving, naturally occurring substances that can be up to 10x more powerful than morphine. (I suppose if you’re craving green leafy vegetables, then acupuncture isn’t the only craving that’s good for you. ) My last blog post talked about the nature of cravings and how they have to power to direct you into balance or push you off balance, depending on your current state of being. The 3 Biggest Mistakes People Make With Chronic Pain

The 3 Biggest Mistakes People Make With Chronic Pain

I treat many patients with chronic pain who find great relief with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. One reason is that acupuncture stimulates the release of natural pain killer-like substances in the body that can be up to ten times more potent than morphine! (No wonder they keep commin’ back! ) Another reason why my patients find so much relief from their pain is because Chinese medicine has a unique view of pain that differs from that of western medicine. Here are the top 3 mistakes people make with chronic pain: 1) Icing too frequently. Icing can be beneficial in acute situations to quickly reduce inflammation, usually within 48 hours of an original injury. However, even then, we don’t use ice in Chinese medicine. Ice creates coldness and stagnation in the body, which creates pain. When Qi (or energy) and Blood flow freely through the body, there is no pain. (Click here to read an earlier blog post describing this concept in more detail.) 2) Exercising when you should be...

Are You Afraid To Go Off The Pill?

Are You Afraid To Go Off The Pill?

You are not alone! Most women I talk to are ashamed or embarrassed to tell me how long they’ve been on the pill. They want to go off of it, but they are afraid their PMS symptoms will get worse (than they already are), their period will be so unpredictable that they won’t know when it’s coming, or their hormones will be so out of whack they’ll be an emotional basket case! (Sound familiar?) In Chinese medicine, the Liver becomes easily stressed thus producing things like irregular periods, horrific PMS symptoms and mood swings. And, yes, you guessed it, one of the ways the Liver becomes stressed is by taking the pill. If you’ve had a gut feeling that you should go off the pill but you’re afraid to, I want to put your mind at ease. Here are 3 reasons why you don’t have to be afraid to go off the pill:   1) Taking Charge of Your Fertility.¬†Every woman should read this book! If you have...

7 Ways To Fall and Stay Asleep Easily Without Using Sleeping Pills

7 Ways To Fall and Stay Asleep Easily Without Using Sleeping Pills

Do you struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep? Do you wish you had a nighttime routine that you actually look forward to? Here are a few tried-and-true tips to increase your Mr. Sandman luring abilities: 1) Eat a SMALL snack before bed such as one or two of the following: whole grain crackers, cheese, turkey, fig, date, apricot, banana, small glass of milk (soy, hazelnut, almond or hemp milk are great alternatives). Those of us who are night owls also tend to be what we call “Yin deficient” in Chinese medicine. All these foods nourish the Yin, which help our bodies calm down and rest at night. 2) Stretch before bed. Do a simple forward bend, where you sit down with your legs and feet straight out in front of you and slowly reach for your toes, holding a position that feels comfortable for 2-5 minutes. This pose relaxes your nervous system and tells the body that it’s time to rest. (There are also some very short, doable...
