3 Unexpected Ways To Reduce Caffeine, Alcohol & Stress

 

Let’s talk stress.

We all experience it, so what do we do about it?

Do you reach for a glass of wine or cup of coffee to bring some relief? I know I do sometimes–wine, no coffee for me. 😉

While caffeine and alcohol seem to be solutions to reducing stress and anxiety, they actually perpetuate a vicious cycle of creating more stress and anxiety in the long run.

In Chinese medicine, the Liver is in charge of the smooth flow of energy in the body. When we are emotionally or physically stressed, our Liver Qi (energy) becomes constricted and we develop a disharmony called Liver Qi Stagnation (LQS).

Symptoms of LQS include irritability, feeling “wound up,” easy to get angry or cry, difficulty taking a deep breath, unable to stay asleep (especially between 1-3am), and PMS symptoms like cramps and breast tenderness. 

When our Liver Qi is stagnated, we also tend to crave things that will temporarily smooth out our Liver Qi and bring us a little reprieve, like alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, sugar, or nicotine.

Unfortunately, all of these vices actually cause more LQS in the long run, and the cycle continues. 

So how do we stop the cycle? Good question! Glad you asked.

We can stop the cycle by taking care of our actual liver.

LQS literally means that the liver is congested and can’t do it’s job of detoxing the body. This can lead to a build-up of toxins in the body and hormone imbalances which can cause all the LQS symptoms I described above.

Interestingly, caffeine and alcohol are both processed in the liver. (See where I’m going with this?) 

So, if we can reduce or eliminate caffeine and alcohol from our bodies, then we are taking a tremendous load off of one of our most important detoxification organs, our liver, so that it can function more optimally.

A more optimally functioning liver means less stress symptoms in our bodies and in our life. Yay!
