4 Fertility Enhancing Therapies To Do At Home

4 Fertility Enhancing Therapies To Do At Home

In my clinical experience as an acupuncturist, I have noticed that a woman’s fertility is particularly responsive to ancient, sophisticated systems of medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I believe it’s because TCM views the body as an ecosystem with many moving parts, which mirrors the complex structure of a woman’s fertility. Ancient therapies are what I first turn to when something ails me, my family, or my patients because they work, they are gentle on the body, and they promote bringing the body back into balance instead of throwing it more off balance just to eliminate symptoms. (Of course, sometimes western medicine is absolutely necessary! I have been immensely grateful for it on more than one occasion in my life, here and here.) Below are four of my favorite ancient healing therapies that work to restore the balance of a woman’s fertility, thereby increasing her fertile health and chances of successfully conceiving, with or without the help of western medicine.   Fertility Femoral Massage   Redirects blood flow to the reproductive organs...

Taking Back Postpartum: My Weight Loss Journey

Taking Back Postpartum: My Weight Loss Journey

The childbearing phase of a woman’s life brings with it a whole host of additional body image issues. As if the teenage years weren’t brutal enough. During my first pregnancy at age 32, I gained 26 lbs. and lost it all within six months of delivering. I followed my own nutrition advice and bam. Easy-peasy. During my second pregnancy at age 34, I gained 50 lbs. and losing it has been humbling. My second daughter just turned one, and people still ask me how my pregnancy is going, if I’m having a boy or a girl, and how excited I must be to have a third on the way. The first few times that happened, I was absolutely mortified. I’ve never been overweight, and for the first time in my life I felt embarrassed about my body for being too big instead of being too small. (Can’t win, right?) Somewhere along the way, my brain has learned that if I want to look beautiful, successful, and healthy, I am supposed to...

Are Coffee And Alcohol Really That Bad For Your Fertility?

Are Coffee And Alcohol Really That Bad For Your Fertility?

One of the most common phrases I hear from my patients is, “As soon as I get pregnant I will stop drinking coffee and alcohol.” The trouble with that strategy is that the pregnancy may never happen if the liver is compromised. Let me explain. No, there is too much, let me sum up. (Name that movie!) Did you know: Any alcohol consumed during an IVF cycle reduces its chance of success by 50%. Coffee constricts blood vessels while tea opens them. In order to ensure optimal functioning of a woman’s reproductive organs, there must be adequate blood flow.    Having said that, I wholeheartedly agree with one of my favorite mentors, Dr. Libby Weaver, who accurately explains, “It’s not what you do once in awhile, it’s what you do everyday that makes a difference in your health.” So how much coffee and alcohol can you have without compromising your fertility?   1-3 cups of coffee or 1-3 glasses of wine per month is what I would consider “once in awhile” and very...

How I Easily Chose My Second Cesarean Birth

How I Easily Chose My Second Cesarean Birth

There are two births that come with every new baby–the birth of the baby, and the birth of the birth story. A mother’s telling of the birth of her child, I believe, has the potential to be profoundly healing, not only for her, but for any woman who hears her story. As I nursed my baby at three this morning, I read another mama’s birth story. I was riveted, and I kept reading even though my daughter had long since fallen asleep. As I crawled back in bed, I found myself thinking about this other woman’s birth story instead of my own. Up until that night, I would lay awake, my mind turning over the events of Vivi’s birth, over and over. Did I make the right decisions? Is there anything I would have done differently? Am I traumatized? Is she? But this time I thought of someone else, felt her suffering and pain, her joy and renewal. Just from reading her story, I realized, I felt more healed...

13 Simple Ways To Protect Your Fertility From Environmental Pollutants

13 Simple Ways To Protect Your Fertility From Environmental Pollutants

The fact is, we live in an increasingly toxic world. Our cells are exposed to environmental pollutants that didn’t exist 100 years ago.   One of the ways we are seeing the effect of these toxins is in the increasing numbers of women with hormone imbalances facing infertility issues.   So, what are signs and symptoms of a hormone imbalance?   Unexplained weight gain Mood swings Fatigue PMS Insomnia Low libido Night sweats   Do any of these sound familiar?   If you find yourself nodding to any of the above symptoms, especially if you’re trying to get pregnant, read on, Sister.   According to a recent study done by The Endocrine Society, certain chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis, called endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), have a negative impact on male and female fertility.   How exactly do these chemicals harm our fertility?   These endocrine disruptors can actually mimic naturally occurring hormones causing interference with the production, release, transport, metabolism and elimination of...
